Orvieto

Orvieto is a town perched on volcanic rock about an hour outside of Rome. N was giving a lecture so I had lots of time to explore. The holes in the rock are in caves underneath the city. Everyone thought they were for storing wine, but no, they served as roosts for pigeons, which were a main source of food through the years.

The Nunnery

M is staying in a nunnery outside of Florence... it's a beautiful place. The rooms are rather sparse and decorated only with off-center iconography.

We stood in line to get into the Vatican museums for 1.5 hours.

Bush in Rome

Bush was in Rome on Saturday: there was a huge protest with tens of thousands of people. The next day we heard that there were riots, although we didn't see any. By "riots" they probably meant a handful of protesters throwing a few rocks at riot police.

Ancient Rome

Miniature Horse

I went home to Nova Scotia and discovered my mom has a mini horse as a neighbour. It is young, but it won't grow much bigger.
